The automotive world is buzzing with the latest innovation from Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Geely and the Renault Group. They've unveiled a groundbreaking range-extender hybrid powertrain with an advanced axial-flux electric motor, promising significant efficiency gains and a unique approach to decarbonization.
What makes this technology truly fascinating is its compact and powerful design. The axial-flux motor, with its pancake-shaped form, is 46% shorter than its radial-flux counterpart, making it incredibly space-efficient. This is a game-changer for hybrid cars, especially in tight spaces like the gearbox area. And it doesn't stop there; this motor packs a punch, producing 63% more power than a radial-flux motor of the same size, resulting in a formidable 141bhp.
But what's even more intriguing is the application of this technology. Horse Powertrain isn't targeting high-performance supercars; instead, they're focusing on practicality and efficiency. The D20 powertrain, for instance, pairs the axial-flux motor with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter methanol engine. This setup generates electricity to recharge a 40kWh battery pack, using a surprisingly small amount of methanol - just 19.6 litres (4.3 gallons).
Methanol, though not commonly used, is gaining traction in China, thanks to Geely's support. The company has been promoting its use in large taxi fleets and even unveiled a one-make-racing version of its Xingyao 6 saloon powered by biofuel. This strategic move reflects Horse Powertrain's commitment to accelerating decarbonization through hybridization, rather than solely relying on full battery electrification.
CEO Matias Giannini's perspective is insightful. He believes that widespread EV adoption is still a distant goal, and in the meantime, companies like Horse Powertrain have a responsibility to tackle decarbonization. This approach not only addresses the immediate need for efficiency but also challenges the industry to think differently about powertrain development.
In my opinion, this innovation is a testament to the power of thinking outside the box. By combining a compact, powerful motor with a practical fuel source, Horse Powertrain is paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future. It's a refreshing take on hybrid technology, and I'm excited to see how it evolves and impacts the automotive industry.
